Misconceptions About Dermal Fillers

Misconceptions about Dermal Fillers

Despite being one of the most well-known, effective, and popular treatments for both men and women to reverse the signs of aging, there are still a number of misconceptions about dermal fillers.

Wanting to look your best, whether in your 20’s, 40’s, or 60’s and 70’s, dermal fillers are a tool that should be part of your regular skin maintenance routine. Dermal fillers add volume, fill in wrinkles and ridges, and can boost collagen growth, all enhancing a natural healthy and youthful appearance.

There are many kinds of dermal fillers out there, and while fillers are considered safe and effective, dermal filler myths and their incorrectly negative reputation still find a way to gain attention and create anxiety and harm around these incredibly useful beauty tools!

If you’re unsure if fillers are right for you, read on to learn more.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatments today. The treatment consists of using injectable gels to treat areas where the production of collagen, a protein that gives your skin strength and resiliency, has naturally decreased.

Dermal fillers add volume to areas of your face and hands that have become wrinkled, lax, or hollowed out as you age in order to give you back your youthful face lost by aging. Here are some other amazing things that dermal fillers can do:

  • Smooth fine lines
  • Plump up your lips
  • Fill in sunken cheeks
  • Improve a weak chin
  • Strengthen jawline
  • Improve nasolabial folds
  • Improve eye bags and dark circles
  • Enhance the shape of your nose

Sounds great, right? If only it weren’t so expensive and so bad for you, maybe you’d do it? What if we told you a high price tag and the “bad-for-you reputation” are a myth? And they’re not the only ones!

Dermal Filler Misconception #1: They are Made Out of Toxins

One of the most common misconceptions about dermal fillers is that they’re made out of toxins, plastics, or silicone, and that just is not true.

Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a powerful moisturizer that can be found in many topical beauty products. This acid holds on to a significant amount of moisture, so it hydrates your skin as well as adding volume to provide a plump and hydrated look.

Dermal Filler Misconception #2: The Treatments are Expensive

Not true, thankfully. Going through dermal filler treatment can be very affordable depending on the number of injections you need, the number of targeted areas, and the frequency of treatments you will undergo.

When you consider how much money you’ve invested into anti-aging creams and other beauty products promising unrealistic results, you may even be saving money by choosing the long term effects of dermal fillers!

Dermal Filler Misconception #3: The Results Look Artificial

Yes, there’s no denying the fact that if it is poorly done, it will look fake, but when administered correctly, fillers should produce beautiful and natural-looking results.

One of the biggest problems with filler treatments nowadays is excessive use. If too much filler is used or if it is applied in the wrong place, the treatment will almost always result in a weird and unnatural-looking face.

At Skin Theory, we consider using fillers an art. We don’t just inject everyone in the same way, in the same places, with the same amount.  First, we listen to your ideas and concerns.  Then we analyze your face and create a custom filler plan for you. This means you get natural and beautiful results.

Dermal Filler Misconception #4: There’s a Lot of Downtime and Bruising

toxic substances, misconceptions about dermal fillers, myths about dermal fillers, are dermal fillers bad, dermal filler safety, wrong ideas about dermal fillers

This isn’t true at all! Yes, certain facial aesthetics procedures take time or repeated sessions to achieve the desired results, but dermal fillers aren’t typically one of these.

Dermal filler treatment is one of the least invasive cosmetic treatments available. It boasts minimal discomfort and requires little to no downtime.

You can enjoy results after just one session and the appointment usually lasts around 30 minutes. So, over a lunch break, you could achieve an incredible look that lasts up to a year. Amazing, right?

There is typically minimal bruising and swelling that occurs with filler injections. When it does happen, it’s usually around the eyes or mouth and can be reduced by using cool compresses and elevating the head of the bed.

It’s usually not too visible and can easily be covered with make-up. Even if you experience some bruising, you should be able to jump back into your normal daily routine without hassle.

Dermal Filler Misconception #5: They Hurt

False! The thought of painful injections can understandably prevent a person from achieving the look they want, so let’s put that to rest right here. Dermal fillers aren’t known for being painful.

Yes, to get dermal fillers means you will get injections into the skin which can cause mild discomfort, but the needles used for this treatment are very fine.

This means that it feels like a mere pinprick as it passes under the skin and the expertise of our specialists means we can keep discomfort to a minimum.

When getting fillers, the cosmetic service provider also uses topical numbing medications that are applied to the injection site to curb any pain you may feel during the injection.

Dermal Filler Misconception #6: Dermal Fillers and Botox are the Same

This is a common misconception but dermal fillers and Botox® are not the same things at all! They are both performed using injections but they are different products and are used for different outcomes.

Botox relaxes the area, while fillers add volume to an area. Botox is a muscle relaxant used to soften the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines as well as to prevent wrinkles from forming. It can also be a very effective treatment when it’s right for you.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are used to build up an area and restore lost volume, for example, under the eyes.

Dermal Filler Misconception #7: The Procedure is Irreversible

Another common misconception about fillers is that if you don’t like their fillers, you’ll be stuck with them forever. But that’s not the case, this treatment is temporary and is reversible!

Most filler products today are hyaluronic acid products which generally last for between 3 and 6 months, before disappearing completely or going back to the original appearance.

But if you can’t wait that long, there is also an enzyme that will dissolve the filler quickly. Most filler products used today, including Juvéderm and Restylane®, are made of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid can be reversed with an agent called hyaluronidase, a family of enzymes that break up the acid that thus reverses the process.

The key is to be sure you go to a reputable med spa using the newest most advanced filler options.  Beware of fake injectables and non-certified providers.

Dermal Filler Misconception #8: The Treatment Can Be Performed by Anyone

A big, big no! Having this treatment isn’t simply a case of knowing how to use a needle, it is an extremely complicated procedure.

A dermal filler injection is a medical procedure and should be carried out by a doctor who has expertise in facial aesthetics and years of training when it comes to performing these procedures in a medical clinic.

Only trained specialists know exactly where and how much filler you need to achieve the results that you want.
