The FDA recently approved it as a frown line treatment product in the same medication class as Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA). It is the first and only neuromodulator stabilized with Peptide Exchange Technology™ (PXT) and free from human serum albumin (a protein found in human blood) and animal-based components. Daxxify was developed by Revance Therapeutics, the group that brought us the RHA Collection.
This revolutionary, peptide-powered frown line treatment is the latest advancement in anti-aging technology. In addition, it has a median duration of 6 to 9 months, so you don’t have to worry about constantly getting injections. Plus, this innovative treatment is suitable for a variety of patients – both men and women alike.1
Daxxify works similarly to Botox. When injected into the face, it delivers a potent botulinum toxin that blocks certain nerve signals from interacting with specific facial muscles and temporarily prevents those muscles from contracting or moving. Stopping the movement of these muscles relaxes wrinkles and fine lines in the skin, providing a smoother and more youthful appearance.
How is Daxxify different from Botox and other wrinkle treatments?
Unlike traditional injectables like Botox and Dysport, which often require multiple treatments to maintain results over time, Daxxify has been designed to provide longer-lasting wrinkle reduction.
Studies have shown that when Botox Cosmetic is used for frown lines, most people see improvement over four months. However, with Daxxify, you can expect results that last up to six months. This means longer-lasting results and more peace of mind knowing your wrinkles and frown lines won’t reappear as quickly.
Clinical trials have shown that at least 50% of patients who received Daxxify had no or mild frown lines for 24 weeks (6 months) and 23.9 weeks (6 months) or longer, while 5% had no or mild frown lines for up to 9 months.
Daxxify is truly unique among botulinum toxin products due to its peptide formulation. Peptides are made up of amino acids, the foundational building blocks for proteins. These peptides create a stable base for Daxxify, compared to other products that use human or animal protein components.
What are the side effects of Daxxify treatments?
The FDA will only approve a drug if it is safe and effective. However, as with other neuromodulators, there is a chance you may experience side effects like headaches, pain and swelling at the injection site, drooping eyelids, or facial asymmetry after receiving a Daxxify injection.
If you experience any side effects from Daxxify, they may last longer because the injection results are supposed to last longer.
For this reason, it is recommended by some practitioners to try a different injectable for first-time patients to ensure that they do not have an unpleasant reaction to neuromodulators before giving them a solution that may last for a while.
How much does a Daxxify treatment cost compared to Botox injections?
The creators of Daxxify have yet to release pricing information. However, some media sources speculate that because Daxxify injections will not be required as often as other botulinum toxin treatments, it may be priced higher than its competitors. For example, Botox Cosmetics typically costs $10-15 per unit. In 2020, the average cost for one treatment was $466.
When will Daxxify be available?
It will not be available to most people until next summer, according to Revance. However, the company is launching an education and training program for providers later this year that will run through March 2023. They will then start sending the product out to around 4,000 practices nationwide.
Is Daxxify better than Botox or other injectables?
Daxxify is another exciting option to try, and it does not necessarily mean it’s better than other wrinkle relaxers such as Botox. Both offer different results and experiences for everyone, and you may find that you prefer one over the other, and your provider should help walk you through the decision, so you’re comfortable with it.
No matter what product you choose, regular maintenance may still be necessary to maintain desired results over time. Daxxify and Botox have proven safe and effective for smoothing wrinkles when used correctly under the supervision of a certified injector specializing in cosmetic injectables.
